The hospitality industry is almost as old as mankind and the careers related to this industry are numerous. The very first career that comes to mind when you think of this industry is the humble receptionist.

The moment you go past the doorman you are greeted by a receptionist and that is where many a people have started his journey to the numerous careers within hospitality industry. Apart from the receptionist the careers that involve the same profile would be that of information clerk or desk coordinator. There are sectors which refer to the same job with the title ‘Director of First Impressions’.

In hospitality careers receptionist is the keeper of the very first and foremost bastion. One can get this job with a high school diploma or some vocational certificate. The business duties would entail directing visitors to their destinations, sorting mail, answering phone calls, handling guest and visitor enquiries and office administration.

Almost all who start at this position gradually grow up into various high end positions within the hospitality industry. The job of receptionist is most likely a stepping stone in all cases where you haven’t had the opportunity to arm yourself with a good professional degree. Yet, people do manage to go places from this point onwards.
